What does a tech editor do?
I will go through every detail of your pattern with a fine tooth comb to make sure it is accurate and accessible. This includes the checking of:
Tension (gauge)- does it match your schematic and stitch/row counts?
Sizing - is all the maths correct across all sizes given?
Charts - are they accurate?
Instructions - does the pattern make sense and is it clear, consistent and easy to read?
Abbreviations - is the list present and correct?
Images - are the photos consistent with what is in the pattern?
Style - is the format consistent with your pattern style or the style of the publication?
I will then give you clear feedback with suggestions and explanations, where applicable. I also carry out a final read through of the pattern once any changes have been made, so that you can feel confident releasing your pattern design.
Can’t I just tech edit my own pattern?
There is nothing to stop your from editing your own pattern but proof reading your own work is not easy to do and mistakes can be easily missed. I am a qualified knitting pattern tech editor and I work methodically to make sure your pattern is accurate, while still maintaining your voice as the pattern designer.
I use test knitters, do I still need a tech editor?
A test knitter is usually an unpaid role in which a volunteer knits up the pattern and gives feedback on their experience. They are extremely helpful in the design process and focus mainly on the finished item. However, they are not trained to pick up on the finer details of the actual pattern, that a technical editor will be looking for.
How long does it take?
I aim to get back to you with an edit within 14 days, though times vary depending on the complexity of the pattern. If you are working to a deadline, please let me know in advance and we can discuss timings.
How much does it cost?
My rate is £30 per hour, billed in increments of 15 minutes. I will always give you an estimate before I start and if you are on a tight budget you can set a limit, or ask me to prioritise certain areas.
As a general guide, a simple accessory might take no more than 1 hour. More complex items, multiple-sized garments etc. will take longer. I do not charge for the final read through after changes have been implemented.
